The Import Duty Calculator estimates customs duties, VAT, levies, and total landed costs for goods imported into 17 African countries. It covers major markets including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, and more — with duty rates based on each country's published harmonised tariff schedules. Enter your product category, declared FOB value, shipping cost, and destination country, and the tool calculates a full breakdown of every applicable charge including customs duty, country-specific levies, and VAT converted to local currency.
This tool is essential for importers, e-commerce businesses, freight forwarders, and individuals shipping goods internationally. Hidden customs costs are one of the biggest surprises in African trade. A smartphone worth $500 can land in Lagos at over ₦1.2 million once NCS duties, CISS, ETLS, VAT, and clearing fees are included. This calculator makes all those costs visible before you commit to a shipment.
Import duty structures vary significantly between African countries. Nigeria's NCS applies rates of 5–35% on most goods, with electronics at 15% and vehicles at 35%. Kenya's KRA uses the East African Community Common External Tariff (EAC CET), with additional IDF and RDL levies adding ~6% on top of CIF before VAT. South Africa's SARS charges 0% on many electronics but 45% on clothing — making it among Africa's most product-sensitive tariff schedules. Ghana's GRA adds NHIL, GETFund, and ECOWAS levies on top of base duty, pushing effective rates 5–10% higher than headline figures suggest.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), now operational across 47+ member states, is progressively reducing intra-African tariffs. By 2030, 90% of goods traded within Africa should attract zero duty. Until then, this calculator reflects the standard MFN tariff rates applicable to most imports from outside Africa.
Nigeria's NCS calculates duty on CIF value. The duty rate varies 5-50% by HS code classification. After duty, VAT of 7.5% is applied to (CIF + duty). Additional levies: CISS (1% of FOB value), ETLS (0.5% of CIF), and surcharge (7% of duty for applicable items). Total landed cost includes all these converted to NGN.
Kenya KRA applies EAC Common External Tariff (CET) rates on CIF value. Additional levies: Import Declaration Fee (IDF) 3.5% of CIF, Railway Development Levy (RDL) 2.5% of CIF, VAT 16% on (CIF + duty + IDF + RDL). Excise duty applies on select goods like vehicles and alcohol.
South Africa has 0% customs duty on many electronics and machinery categories. Botswana and Namibia (SACU members) also have competitive rates. However, total landed cost depends on VAT, additional levies, and the exchange rate. Use our Compare Countries tab to see the full picture for your specific product.
HS codes (Harmonized System) are 6-10 digit numbers classifying products for customs. Example: 8517 = Telephone equipment, 8517.13 = Smartphones. Include the full code on your commercial invoice and customs declaration. Use our HS Code Lookup tab to search by product name.
FOB (Free On Board) is the goods value at the port of origin. CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) includes the goods value plus shipping and insurance costs to the destination port. Import duties are typically calculated on the CIF value, which is why shipping costs directly affect your total import cost.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to eliminate tariffs on 90% of goods traded between member states. However, implementation is phased and varies by country. Some goods may still attract duties depending on rules of origin. Check your specific corridor for current AfCFTA preferences.
Import costs across Africa usually start with CIF, then stack customs duty, VAT, and market-specific levies. If you only budget for the headline duty rate, you usually underprice the true landed cost.
