KRA iTax Guide 2026 — Login, PIN, Returns & P9

How the KRA iTax portal works: registering a KRA PIN, logging in, filing your annual return with a P9, NIL returns, and the deadlines that matter. AfroTools is independent — official actions always happen on itax.kra.go.ke.

Last reviewed: July 2026

Quick answer: iTax is the Kenya Revenue Authority’s official online portal at itax.kra.go.ke. You log in with your KRA PIN and password to file returns, pay tax and manage your account. Individual annual returns are due by 30 June; employers remit PAYE by the 9th of the following month. Before filing, check your salary numbers with the free Kenya PAYE calculator.

What you can do on iTax

How to log in to iTax

  1. Open itax.kra.go.ke.
  2. Enter your KRA PIN and click Continue.
  3. Enter your password and solve the short arithmetic security question.
  4. Forgot your password? Use Forgot Password — the reset link goes to the email registered on your PIN. If you no longer control that email, update it through KRA support channels first.

Filing your employment income return with a P9

  1. Get your P9 form from your employer (issued at the end of each tax year, usually by February).
  2. Log in to iTax and go to Returns → File Return → Income Tax Resident Individual.
  3. Download the Excel/ODS return, fill in the employment income, PAYE deducted and reliefs exactly as they appear on the P9, then upload the completed file.
  4. Submit and download your acknowledgement receipt. If PAYE was correctly deducted all year, most employees owe nothing extra.

Want to sanity-check the PAYE on your P9? Enter your gross monthly salary into the Kenya PAYE calculator — it applies the current KRA bands, NSSF (Year 4, Feb 2026), SHIF 2.75% and the Housing Levy, and flags the AHL relief repeal that many older calculators still get wrong.

KRA iTax FAQ

What is KRA iTax?

iTax is the Kenya Revenue Authority’s official online portal at itax.kra.go.ke. Taxpayers use it to register for a KRA PIN, file returns (including NIL returns), pay taxes, apply for Tax Compliance Certificates, and manage their taxpayer account.

How do I file a NIL return on iTax?

Log in, choose Returns → File NIL Return, select the obligation (for most individuals, Income Tax Resident), confirm the period and submit. A NIL return applies when you had no income for the year but hold an active KRA PIN.

When is the iTax filing deadline?

Individual annual returns for a calendar year are due by 30 June of the following year. Employers remit PAYE by the 9th of the month after payroll.

What if I don’t have my P9?

Request it from your HR or payroll department — employers are required to issue it after the end of the tax year. Without it you cannot accurately complete the employment income section of your return.

Is AfroTools part of KRA iTax?

No. AfroTools is an independent calculator site. It estimates Kenya PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and Housing Levy so you can check your numbers first. All official actions — registration, filing, payment — happen on the KRA iTax portal.
