How the full-duration total is calculated
Year-one recurring cost equals per-term costs × terms, monthly costs × spending months, transport × trips, plus annual charges. Later recurring costs compound by the inflation assumption. Setup costs are added once in year one. Contingency is applied to each year’s recurring and one-time subtotal.
How an optional day-school comparison works
The planner uses only the all-in annual amount you enter and applies the same annual inflation assumption. It does not assume what day school includes, so your amount should include the family’s expected tuition, meals, transport, supervision and other relevant costs.
What the result cannot tell you
Cost does not establish school quality, safety, academic outcomes, pastoral care or suitability for a child. Review inspection or accreditation status, safeguarding, health support, boarding supervision, communication rules and current parent policies separately.
Boarding school budget questions
Does AfroTools provide average government, mission or private fees?
No. Those labels do not create reliable fee bands across countries or schools. Enter the current written fee circular for each school.
What should go into setup costs?
Examples can include an application or admission charge, deposit, uniform, sports kit, bedding, trunk, books or device. Avoid double-counting anything already included in term or annual fees.
Should pocket money cover all 12 months?
Usually not. Enter only the number of months when that spending occurs. The period field makes that assumption visible in the report.
Can the estimate prove boarding is better value?
No. It compares entered costs only. Academic outcomes, care, safety, travel burden and family fit require separate evidence and judgment.
