Calculation methodology

The shared engine adds or extracts Rwanda VAT using the Article 4 standard rate. Zero-rated and exempt treatment is available only after the user confirms an exact current Article 7 or Article 8 basis. Registration screening uses strict above-threshold tests for prior-fiscal-year turnover and preceding-quarter turnover; it does not register, file or determine treatment for the user.

Known limitations

  • Informational estimate only. It is not professional tax, legal, payroll, or filing advice.
  • Zero-rating, exemption, input-tax recovery, public-procurement withholding and special treatment require exact current legal classification and are not inferred.
  • The 2025 amendment removed or changed exemptions; old category summaries must not be used as current classification advice.
  • Confirm filing, registration, and remittance duties with the official authority or a qualified adviser before submission.

Test-case examples

Input: Net amount RWF 1,000 at the standard rate.
Expected: VAT is RWF 180 and the VAT-inclusive total is RWF 1,180.
Why: Protects the Article 4 standard add-VAT path.

Input: Prior fiscal-year turnover is exactly RWF 20 million, then RWF 20,000,000.01.
Expected: The exact threshold does not trigger; the amount strictly above it does, subject to official confirmation.
Why: Protects the statutory above-threshold boundary.
