The standard VAT rate in Egypt is 14%. This applies to most goods and services. A reduced rate of 5% applies to essential items like staple foods and medicines. Exports are zero-rated.
The 5% reduced rate applies to essential goods including: staple foods (grains, oils, sugar), medicines and medical devices, books and newspapers, and certain other basic necessities. A complete list is available from ETA.
Exempt services include: unprocessed food supplies, medical and health services, education and training, financial services (banking, insurance), and certain government services. These do not charge VAT.
To extract VAT from a total amount: Divide the total by 1.14 to get the net, then subtract net from total to get VAT amount. This calculator does this automatically when you select "Remove VAT" mode.
Businesses with annual turnover exceeding EGP 500,000 are required to register for VAT with the Egyptian Tax Authority. Smaller businesses can voluntarily register for VAT.
VAT-registered businesses must file monthly VAT returns with the Egyptian Tax Authority and remit VAT monthly. The filing deadline is typically the 20th of the following month.
