Travel between African countries is governed by a complex web of bilateral agreements, regional bloc protocols, and individual national policies. Despite the African Union's push for free movement through Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), visa barriers remain significant for many country pairs. Progress has been uneven — East African countries like Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda offer relatively open borders to other Africans, while some other regions maintain stricter requirements.
The ECOWAS protocol on free movement allows citizens of the 15 member states to travel visa-free for up to 90 days within the bloc. This covers Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, and other West African nations. The East African Community (EAC) allows even longer stays — up to 6 months — for citizens of member states. Rwanda has been particularly progressive, granting visa-free access to all African nationals since 2018.

Yes. As fellow ECOWAS member states, Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens can travel to each other's country without a visa for stays of up to 90 days. This applies to all 15 ECOWAS member states. You only need your valid passport (or in some cases a national ID card) to cross ECOWAS borders. Extended stays beyond 90 days require a residence permit.
An e-visa is an electronically issued visa you apply for online before traveling, without visiting an embassy. Ethiopia's e-visa (evisa.gov.et) is a popular example for African travelers. Since 2018, Rwanda has granted visa-free entry to all African Union passport holders on arrival, making it a leader in continental free movement. African visitors receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport. This was part of Rwanda's strategy to position itself as a pan-African hub. Non-African nationals may still require a visa or can get one on arrival for USD 30.
