How Stacked Discounts Work

When a store offers "20% off plus an extra 10% off", these are sequential (stacked) discounts, not additive. The first discount is applied to the original price, then the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. This means 20% + 10% gives an effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Example

Original price: ₦10,000. First 20% off = ₦8,000. Then 10% off ₦8,000 = ₦7,200. Total savings: ₦2,800 (28% effective discount). This is important during sales events like Black Friday, Jumia sales, and Konga special offers in Nigeria.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do stacked discounts work?
They're applied sequentially. 20% + 10% = 28% effective (not 30%). Each discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Discount vs markup?
Discount reduces selling price. Markup increases cost price to get selling price. Different base amounts.
Can I find the original price from a discounted price?
To find original price: divide the final price by (1 - discount/100). For 20% off giving ₦8,000: original = 8000 / 0.8 = ₦10,000.
