TikTok published its 2026 Discover List on February 25, 2026, naming 50 creators to watch globally across five categories: Educators, Foodies, Icons, Innovators and Originators. The Sub-Saharan Africa selection includes five named creators from Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.
The African creators listed by TikTok are Olawale Ogunlana in Lagos, Nigeria, known on TikTok as @doctorwalesmd; Wayne Chang in Cape Town, South Africa, known as @munchin_mash; Trevor Were in Nairobi, Kenya, known as @saute_with_trevor; Cherie Kihato in Nairobi, Kenya, known as @cheriekihato; and Tamia Nontsikelelo in Johannesburg, South Africa, known as @tolthema.
TikTok described Ogunlana as a medical doctor who turns complex health topics into easy-to-digest videos and noted that he is the founder of HealthKraft Africa and one of TikTok's Sub-Saharan Wellbeing Ambassadors. TikTok placed Chang and Were in the Foodies category, with Chang using South African ingredients in food content and Were building recipe videos from his home kitchen in Nairobi.
Why it matters
This is more than a list post. It is a platform signal about which types of African creator work are being elevated in 2026: practical health education, food storytelling, design entrepreneurship and commerce-led community building.
Kihato was listed as an Originator for Savannah Space, her Kenyan design studio and showroom. TikTok said her content documents creative business work and reaches design lovers, makers and aspiring creatives beyond Kenya. Nontsikelelo was also listed as an Originator for using storytelling and marketing around Tol'thema, her modest fashion brand in Johannesburg.
For African creators, the useful pattern is clear. TikTok is not only rewarding viral entertainment. The named African creators are building around authority, cultural production, food, education, product storytelling and audience trust. Those are creator economy assets that can travel beyond one platform.
