Standalone Showmax is officially on the way out across Africa, and the migration timetable is now public. DStv's April 1, 2026 migration guide says eligible Showmax subscribers can move into DStv Stream Compact on trial access, and that the Showmax streaming service will be discontinued on April 30, 2026 at 23:59.
The wider platform shift is bigger than a billing change. DStv's April 15, 2026 update says Showmax Originals and select titles are moving into a dedicated Showmax section inside DStv Stream, where they sit alongside live TV and sport. That means titles tied to the Showmax brand are being folded into a broader MultiChoice streaming surface rather than disappearing outright.
MultiChoice's March 5, 2026 announcement on the CANAL+ platform side explains the corporate logic. The company said Showmax would be discontinued after a review of its streaming activities, said the service had been generating unsustainable annual losses, and said the business would keep focusing on DStv Stream and its wider entertainment stack across 50 African countries. The same announcement also said the shutdown would not involve retrenchments.
There are important user-facing details too. DStv says Showmax subscriptions will not migrate automatically. Customers who want to keep watching need to sign up for DStv Stream, create a new profile, and start fresh because watch history and profiles do not move across. DStv also says some titles cannot move because of content licensing agreements, even though many Showmax Originals and popular catalog titles will be available.
For African creators, producers, and distributors, the signal is clear. MultiChoice is no longer trying to keep Showmax as a standalone streaming destination. It is repositioning African originals inside a larger DStv Stream bundle where local drama, live channels, and SuperSport now compete for the same audience attention.
