Ninety visual storytellers move through the regional stage
M-PESA Foundation says 90 Kenyan creators were selected through the Capture the Good photography and videography challenge. Its August 2 update says the regional judging stage produced bronze, silver and gold winners in each category and region, with awards of KES 50,000, KES 75,000 and KES 100,000 respectively.
The selected creators then joined a masterclass with industry experts and judges. An official August 1 update says the photographers and videographers used the sessions to develop their work, exchange ideas and prepare revised submissions for the next judging stage. The strongest projects would move forward to represent their regions nationally.
The foundation is now showing the work behind the entries
On August 14, the foundation profiled videographer Timothy Wafula and the assignment that took him to Kabuyefwe Boys Senior School. The post describes his attempt to document the effect of an M-PESA Foundation project at the school and links to a longer video about his process.
That profile gives the challenge a current creator-level view rather than only a prize announcement. It shows how a participant selected a community project, travelled to the site and built a visual story around people and facilities there.
What the programme covers
At launch, Safaricom said the challenge covered 250 foundation projects in education, health, economic empowerment and environmental conservation. It was organised with the Photographers Association of Kenya and the Photojournalists Association of Kenya, with Vivo named as mobile photography partner.
