Mdundo investment proposal puts Africa-focused music streaming platform in play

Mdundo, the Kenya-born Africa-focused music streaming platform, has received a non-binding investment proposal that could give a third-party investor up to about 40% of the company.

What happened

Music Business Worldwide reported on May 7, 2026 that Mdundo, the Africa-focused music streaming platform founded in Kenya in 2013, received a non-binding letter of intent from an unnamed third party. The proposal could involve a directed issue of new shares plus a possible purchase of shares from major shareholders, including JVD Holding ApS, which is owned by Mdundo board chair Jesper Drescher.

The proposed transaction could give the investor a stake of up to about 40% in Mdundo. MBW reported that the indicated subscription price is DKK 2.50 per share, compared with the DKK 1.00 subscription price used in the rights issue that closed this week.

Why creators should care

This is a platform business story with direct creator-economy consequences. Mdundo is not just a music app. It is an Africa-focused distribution and listening channel for artists and labels, built around mobile access and telecom partnerships across the continent.

The same report says Mdundo raised about DKK 8.9 million before costs in the rights issue, about 87.3% of the DKK 10.2 million target. It also says Mdundo has grown from 5 million monthly active users at its 2020 IPO to 41.5 million according to recent rights issue filings, although the company has since shifted its main non-financial KPI toward paying subscribers.

For African artists, the important signal is that regional streaming platforms remain strategic assets. Global platforms dominate headlines, but Mdundo's model connects music discovery, paid subscriptions, telecom bundles and local catalogue reach. If a strategic investor does enter, creators will be watching whether it improves payment products, catalogue investment, artist tools and telecom distribution rather than only changing shareholder structure.

The caution

The proposal is preliminary and non-binding. MBW reported that it remains subject to due diligence, final terms and approvals, and that Mdundo's board said there is no assurance a transaction will be agreed or completed.

AfroStream verified this story on May 8, 2026 from Music Business Worldwide's May 7 report and treated it as a business-platform update, not a completed acquisition.
