Kenya's UrbanTok launch puts creator payouts at the centre

Kenyan-owned video and livestreaming platform UrbanTok has launched with a creator monetization focus, putting local-currency payouts, paid livestreams, gifting and creator commerce at the centre of its pitch to African creators.

Kenya's UrbanTok is giving the African creator economy a new platform story to watch. The Kenyan-owned video-sharing and livestreaming service was officially launched during the Connected Africa Summit 2026 in Nairobi, with Kenyan officials and more than 20 African ICT ministers reported at the event.

The platform is owned by Mzawadi Group and led by CEO Naftal Nyabuto, according to coverage by TUKO. UrbanTok is positioning itself as a monetization-first platform for African creators rather than a content app that adds payouts later. Reported features include local-currency payouts, paid livestreams, virtual gifting, advertising revenue sharing, crowdfunding and UrbanDuka, an integrated creator-commerce layer.

Techweez reported that the web version was live with creator videos and that an Android app had appeared on Google Play before becoming unavailable. That makes the rollout worth treating as early-stage rather than fully proven at scale.

The platform's launch matters because African creators often build audiences on global services while facing payout thresholds, payment rails and visibility rules that are not designed around local markets. UrbanTok is trying to make local ownership, local payments and creator commerce part of the core product. The strongest verification point so far is the April 2026 launch around Connected Africa Summit, followed by Capital FM and AllAfrica's June 2 report and TUKO's interview-backed coverage naming Nyabuto and the platform model.
