Guardian report spotlights African news creators reshaping social feeds

The African creator economy is not only entertainment. A May 9, 2026 Guardian feature by Rachel Savage, Carlos Mureithi and Eromo Egbejule profiled online news creators who are turning TikTok, Instagram and other social feeds into everyday civic explainers for younger audiences.

The story opens with South African current affairs creator Amahle-Imvelo Jaxa, whose explainer work grew after she posted about South African peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Guardian also framed the wider shift through creators and analysts in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria.

The data point that matters for AfroStream is the Reuters Institute context behind the feature. Its 2025 Digital News Report and later news-creator mapping work show that Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa are among the markets where social and video users pay unusually strong attention to personalities and creators who cover news. The Guardian cited Nigeria at 61%, Kenya at 58% and South Africa at 39% for attention to news creators among social media users in the three surveyed African markets.

This is a platform story because it shows creators competing with traditional media for attention, not by replacing reporting completely, but by translating public affairs into formats that fit TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and short social video habits. Jaxa told the Guardian she sees herself as a translator of the news for younger generations, while the Reuters Institute research warns that creator-led news also raises trust, misinformation and accountability questions.

For African creators, the signal is clear: civic explanation is now a creator lane. For platforms and publishers, the harder question is how to build credibility around that attention before news discovery becomes fully detached from evidence, sourcing and editorial responsibility.
