What happened
The African Social Media Influencers Summit, known as ASMIS 2026, opened in Addis Ababa on May 7, 2026 for a two-day program running through May 8 at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum. The official ASMIS site lists the dates and venue, while Ethiopian News Agency reported that participants had begun arriving in Addis Ababa ahead of the summit.
The event is focused on African digital creators, influencers, media organizations, policy actors, and private sector leaders. ENA reported in March that the first ASMIS edition was organized by Pulse of Africa in collaboration with AGA-Tech Enterprise under the theme "Creating Impact for a Better Africa." The same report said more than 200 leading influencers from the continent and the diaspora were expected to attend.
Why it matters for creators
This is not just another conference listing. ASMIS gives African creators a live forum around narrative ownership, platform influence, digital innovation, and creator collaboration. ENA reported on May 6 that arriving participants framed the summit around telling African stories through digital platforms and reshaping how the continent is represented.
One named participant, Ugandan influencer Simpo Gladys, also known as Angeyo Rwot Gladys, told ENA that her content focuses on African culture, traditions, and everyday realities that are often ignored by international media outlets. ENA also named Nyako Nyako, Akwanga Esther Ochilii, and CB Talker, Onjeyo Joshua, among participants speaking from Addis Ababa.
For AfroStream, the signal is the same one showing up across the 2026 creator cycle: African creators are not only competing for algorithm reach. They are organizing around infrastructure, credibility, regional collaboration, and the ability to tell stories on their own terms.
