A letter-of-credit quotation can look inexpensive when it shows only an opening commission. The transaction may also involve another bank, repeated document presentations, amendments, foreign-currency settlement and cash held as security. Before accepting the supplier's payment terms, an African importer needs to know which amounts are actual charges, which are financing costs, and which are funds temporarily unavailable to the business.

Use the LC Fee Calculator to organise a first planning breakdown. It models issuance, confirmation, messaging, amendments and margin using built-in country assumptions. It does not obtain a bank quotation, open a credit, approve a facility or verify your shipment documents. Carry its categories into a written bank enquiry, then replace the planning figures with the bank's dated terms.

Sources reviewed: October 7, 2026. This guide is preparation for a bank discussion, not a recommendation to obtain credit or a determination of legal compliance. The named banks illustrate different product and quotation boundaries. Their pages do not establish a single African tariff, collateral percentage, processing deadline or import-document rule.

Prepare one transaction brief before requesting prices

Give each bank the same commercial facts: applicant and beneficiary, countries, invoice currency, credit amount, goods description, shipment route, intended shipment date, expiry and proposed payment timing. Identify whether you are comparing an import documentary credit, export services, or a standby instrument. A quotation for a different product cannot answer your original cost question.

Attach the supplier's current pro forma invoice and proposed payment wording through the bank's approved channel. Ask the trade desk which additional documents it needs at quotation stage. Separate information needed to price the transaction from information needed for onboarding, facility approval and eventual issuance. A preliminary price indication does not complete those other steps.

The International Trade Administration's letter-of-credit overview recommends consulting the bank before the importer applies, including questions about suitable transactions, costs, fee responsibility and disputes. Its exporter perspective provides general context, rather than country-specific African banking requirements.

Specify the payment and confirmation arrangements

Record when payment is intended to fall due and the event from which any deferred period runs. Ask the bank to confirm the exact wording. Keep a supplier's requested payment term separate from an approved borrowing facility. A later payment date under the instrument does not by itself establish that your bank will finance the settlement.

Absa Kenya's trade-finance page distinguishes import, export, transferable, revolving and standby credits, and describes confirmation as a separate service that may be added on request. It also describes credit financing separately. These distinctions are useful questions for a quotation; they are not interchangeable products or automatic approvals.

Ask which bank would issue, advise, confirm and process the documents, and whether those roles have been agreed. Where confirmation is requested, identify who obtains its price and who pays it. A quote that excludes the overseas bank's charge should say so clearly. Request an explanation of what remains conditional on that bank's acceptance.

Build a fee register rather than one total

Create a row for each potential charge. Record its description, charging bank, currency, calculation basis, minimum, billing interval, tax treatment and payment date. Include a source field linking the row to the tariff or written quotation. Mark unresolved rows as awaiting confirmation, rather than entering zero to make the total look complete.

Standard Bank's international-trade help describes distinct advising, confirmation, negotiation, deferred-payment and discount charges. Use that distinction to request a complete explanation. Do not assume another bank uses the same names, bundles the same services, or charges the same customer.

Keep the goods price, freight, insurance, customs and inland delivery in the wider import budget. They do not disappear when the payment method changes. The import-cost checklist helps connect bank costs with that wider planning job without treating an LC quote as a landed-cost quotation.

Check the basis before comparing percentages

A percentage without its charging period is incomplete. Ask whether it applies once, periodically, or for a stated validity period. Confirm how the bank treats part periods, extensions, amount increases and multiple drawings. Record those answers beside the rate so another person can reconstruct the charge.

Where the bank confirms a one-off percentage charge, the starting arithmetic is the applicable amount multiplied by the quoted percentage divided by 100. Apply any confirmed minimum and additional charges separately. Do not multiply by months or quarters unless the quotation explicitly requires that treatment. This is a calculation structure, not a published example rate.

Request a written explanation when a minimum exceeds the percentage calculation or a tax is added. Preserve the original currency for every row. Compare tax-inclusive amounts with tax-inclusive amounts, and do not combine a dollar fee and a local-currency fee until the conversion rate, date and method are identified.

Use a current source for the current quotation

Standard Bank South Africa's 2026 Trade and Forex pricing guide, effective January 1, 2026, says documentary-trade pricing is risk-based and tailored to the business, and directs customers to a relationship or trade sales manager for a detailed quotation. It also identifies the pricing as VAT inclusive. The current document does not provide a universal LC opening rate for readers to reuse.

That is a concrete reason to avoid copying a table from an older guide. A search result may expose a historical PDF after the bank has changed the pricing approach. Record the document year and effective date, check the bank's current page, and ask whether a customer-specific quote overrides the general tariff.

For an undated product page, record the date you reviewed it without inventing an effective date. Keep quotation expiry separate from source-review date. If your shipment plan changes after the quote was issued, ask whether the quote still applies before authorising the credit.

Separate cash margin from fees and settlement

Ask whether the bank requires cash cover, another form of security or an approved facility, and obtain the conditions in writing. Access Bank Nigeria's trade-finance page states that an approved trade-finance facility is required where the importer does not provide cash collateral. That bank-specific statement does not establish one compulsory margin for all importers or all African countries.

In your cash plan, show margin as restricted or committed funds according to the bank's actual arrangement. Show non-refundable service charges in a separate line. Ask how the margin is held, whether it earns interest, when it is applied to settlement, and what conditions govern any release. Avoid promising that the entire deposit will be returned on a fixed date.

Check for double counting. If cash cover is applied toward the goods payment, a worksheet must not treat it both as an additional permanent expense and again as the same settlement amount. At the same time, a margin figure alone is not the entire funding requirement. Fees, uncovered settlement, exchange movements and logistics may still require cash at different times.

Price the document workflow before shipment

Ask which document-related services are included and which trigger additional charges. Record the expected number of presentations and drawings, whether preliminary checking is available, and how courier or electronic submission is handled. Do not assume that one opening commission covers every later document interaction.

Prepare a responsibility list identifying who will issue each required document and when it can be obtained. Match the proposed credit wording with actual supplier and carrier capabilities before issuance. Keep the export packing-list checklist and bill-of-lading checklist alongside that review. They support preparation and do not certify a complying presentation.

Ask the trade desk how a discrepancy is notified, what options may be available and what charges arise. Do not assume a fee buys acceptance, that a buyer's informal message changes the credit, or that a corrected document can always be resubmitted in time. Obtain transaction-specific guidance before taking action on an actual discrepancy.

Control amendments, financing and foreign exchange

Give amendments their own decision log: requested change, reason, authorised person, proposed date, bank response and cost effect. Ask whether extending expiry or increasing the credit amount also changes confirmation, security or financing costs. Retain the issued amendment and any required acceptance evidence with the transaction file.

Where borrowing is proposed, request the facility's separate rate, currency, tenor, repayment events, fees and conditions. Ask how interest is calculated and what happens if the planned goods sale is delayed. Do not describe a deferred-payment instrument as interest-free unless the relevant agreements establish that conclusion.

Record the currencies in which fees and settlement are payable. Ask when the conversion rate becomes binding and whether the quote includes conversion costs. Keep any proposed currency-risk arrangement subject to separate bank explanation and agreement. A calculator result in US dollars does not reserve currency or lock an exchange rate.

Compare equivalent offers and identify exclusions

Compare quotes only after aligning amount, currency, instrument, payment timing, confirmation, validity and expected document activity. Add a column for exclusions and a column for unresolved questions. A lower displayed opening charge cannot establish a cheaper complete transaction when another bank includes services the first quote omits.

The International Trade Administration's documentary-collections overview explains that collection banks facilitate the exchange of documents for payment without providing the same payment guarantee as a letter of credit. Ask the bank to explain this difference before substituting a collection arrangement simply because its fees appear lower.

Use the Trade Finance Cost Comparator to organise planning categories, with its built-in assumptions clearly marked. It cannot determine the right risk arrangement for your supplier or establish access to a facility. Return to the agreed commercial contract and written bank advice before choosing the instrument.

Turn the estimate into a controlled bank handoff

In the LC Fee Calculator, enter the credit value, choose the country and instrument, and record the confirmation, amendment and margin settings used. Review the resulting categories, then use its copy or download controls to retain the estimate. Label it with the calculation date and keep actual quotations separately so model assumptions remain visible.

The current tool uses preset rates and country notes; it is not a live tariff feed and does not accept a complete customer-specific fee schedule. Its general country statements should not be treated as current regulatory requirements. Confirm import documents, facility eligibility and cash-cover conditions directly with the responsible bank and authorities.

Stanbic Uganda's TradeOnline page says platform use is free while transactional billing still applies. This is a useful distinction between access to a channel and the underlying bank charges. AfroTools does not submit an application to that platform or connect to your bank account.

Retain the transaction brief, dated quotation, approved instrument wording, facility or security terms, amendment history, document communications and final debit records. Reconcile actual charges against the quoted basis after settlement. Escalate unexplained differences through the bank's established process, preserving references rather than assuming the planning tool proves an overcharge.

Frequently asked questions

Is cash margin the same as an LC fee?

No. Record the bank charges separately from funds held or applied as cash cover, and confirm the actual release or settlement conditions.

Can I use an older bank tariff as my current quotation?

Check the current document and ask the bank for dated terms. Standard Bank South Africa's 2026 guide directs documentary-trade customers to a tailored risk-based quotation.

Does the LC calculator quote or open a bank instrument?

No. It uses built-in planning assumptions and supports a fee breakdown. The bank must confirm pricing, eligibility, collateral and document wording.

Does paying a discrepancy fee guarantee acceptance?

No. Obtain transaction-specific bank guidance on the discrepancy, available options, required action and applicable deadlines.
