Follow the hermetic bag operating controls

Purdue's PICS farmer poster begins with dry, clean grain and approved bags. It instructs users to inspect the two inner liners for holes or tears, place them correctly inside the outer woven bag, fill while limiting air pockets, and tie each layer securely. It also recommends keeping bags out of direct sunlight and extreme heat, using an elevated platform, leaving space from walls for inspection and avoiding heavily infested grain in the same area.

Turn those instructions into a check sheet for every bag:

  1. Record crop, variety where known, owner, lot, clean weight, moisture result and filling date.
  2. Inspect the outer bag and every inner liner under good light. Reject or repair only as the manufacturer permits.
  3. Remove sharp debris and prepare a clean filling area that will not puncture the liners.

  5. Place the sealed unit on a dry elevated surface, away from walls, sunlight, water and sharp equipment.

Purdue reports that PICS technology has been commercialized widely through licensed manufacturers and distributors, with farmer training across many countries.
