Seed rate looks like a simple input purchase, but it controls the whole season. Too little seed leaves gaps, weak stand density and wasted land preparation. Start with the field and work backwards. If you begin with a seed bag price, the plan can drift. After that, check whether the expected yield and input budget justify the crop choice.
- Measure the field area in hectares, acres, plots or local units, then convert it to a single unit.
- Choose the crop and variety. Maize, rice and cassava use different planting material logic.
- Confirm the row spacing and in-row spacing from official or extension guidance.
- Decide whether the crop is sole-cropped, intercropped, dry-zone planted or irrigated.
- Check seed quality. Germination percentage changes the real quantity to plant.
- Calculate seed, seedlings or cuttings needed, then add a modest contingency for field losses.

What official guides say
The most useful official sources do not give one universal African seed-rate number. They show why the number changes. Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture maize manual treats spacing, seed rate and optimum plant population as part of climate-smart planting. It also gives a practical germination adjustment: where normal maize seed rate is 10 kg per acre and germination is 85 percent, the adjusted rate is calculated as 100 divided by 85, multiplied by 10 kg, giving 12 kg per acre.
Nigeria's NAERLS maize bulletin says about 15 to 20 kg of maize seed is required per hectare, with 3 seeds per hole and thinning to 2 plants per stand after germination. IITA's guide to maize production in Northern Nigeria gives the same 15 to 20 kg per hectare range and pairs it with a 75 x 50 cm spacing where 2 plants per stand are retained. NAERLS rice guidance shows why the crop matters: for viable direct-seeded rice, it lists 50 to 60 kg per hectare for dibble sowing, 80 kg per hectare for drilling and 80 to 100 kg per hectare for broadcasting. Its cassava bulletin is different again because cassava is planted from stems: it gives 1 m x 1 m spacing, or closer 100 cm x 75 cm spacing for certain erect varieties, and describes a 10,000 stands per hectare base population.

Use spacing to expose hidden assumptions
Seed rate in kilograms can hide too many assumptions. Spacing exposes them. If a maize plan says 75 x 50 cm and 2 plants per stand, it is really specifying row distance, within-row distance and final plants retained per station. The seed-rate calculator can then estimate planting stations per hectare and target final plant population. If the same field is intercropped, IITA and NAERLS both warn that spacing should be wider than for sole-cropped maize, so copying a sole-crop seed rate into a mixed maize and legume field can overstate how much maize seed should be used.
For rice, method is the hidden assumption. Dibble sowing, drilling and broadcasting do not use the same seed quantity because placement precision changes. Broadcasting normally needs more seed because plants are not placed at a controlled distance. For cassava, the hidden assumption is not seed size. It is stem quality, cutting length, spacing and stand count. A cassava plan should ask how many cuttings and bundles are needed for the field layout, then check whether the variety and planting date suit local extension guidance.
Record the source behind each planning number in the same worksheet as the budget. A field officer, seed dealer or cooperative buyer may challenge a quantity later, and the answer should be traceable: crop, guide name, publication body, verification date, field area, planting method and germination result. That habit also makes next season easier because you can compare the planned plant population with actual emergence, harvest quantity and profit.
Official formula walkthroughs
The cleanest seed-rate adjustment in the source set comes from Uganda's maize manual. It shows the principle without requiring a fictional farm scenario:

The same logic can be used in planning when an official source provides a base seed rate and a germination result. Do not use the formula to rescue a poor seed lot indefinitely. The Uganda manual's threshold is important because it treats very weak germination as a rejection signal, not just a reason to buy more seed. That distinction protects the field from uneven emergence, weak plants and later replanting costs.

Common planning mistakes
Buying seed before checking area. A hectare, an acre and a local plot are not interchangeable. Use the Farm Size Converter if the land measurement is uncertain.
Ignoring germination tests. Seed labels and storage conditions matter. If germination is weaker than expected, the field may need more seed or a new seed lot. The Uganda MAAIF worked example is useful because it shows both adjustment and rejection logic.
Using sole-crop spacing for intercropping. Maize mixed with cassava, cowpea, soybean or other staples needs crop-specific spacing. IITA and NAERLS both caution that intercrop spacing should be wider than sole-cropped maize.
Copying a national guide into every zone. KALRO's TIMPs disclaimer is the right discipline: verify site-specific details with area extension officers. A high-rainfall maize zone, a dry zone, irrigated rice and root-crop systems do not share one planting density.
Stopping at seed cost. Seed is only one part of the season. Dense planting can raise fertilizer, water and pest-management pressure. Sparse planting can lower yield even if fertilizer is available. The budget and profit calculators should be part of the same worksheet.
