TIN Registration in South Africa — Complete Guide

The Tax Reference Number (TRN) is issued by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in South Africa. Registration is free and typically takes Instant (eFiling) to 5 business days (branch). South Africa offers online TIN registration through the SARS portal, making the process accessible from anywhere. The TIN is governed by the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011; Income Tax Act 58 of 1962; VAT Act 89 of 1991 and administered by the National Treasury.

All businesses operating in South Africa and individuals in formal employment are required to register for a Tax Reference Number. The Tax Reference Number is a 10-digit numeric (starts with 0, 1, 2, 3, or 9) identifier needed for tax filing, business bank accounts, government contracts, and customs clearance. Failure to register carries penalties: zAR 250 per month of non-compliance (admin penalty); criminal prosecution possible.
