African countries observe a mix of national, religious, and cultural holidays. Nigeria has approximately 12 public holidays, while South Africa has 12 national holidays. Kenya observes 10 gazetted public holidays, and Ghana has 13. Islamic holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Maulid) and Christian holidays (Christmas, Easter) are observed across the continent.

Policies vary by country. In South Africa, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday is observed as a holiday. In Nigeria, the Federal Government may declare the Monday as a holiday, but it's not automatic. Kenya follows a similar Monday-substitution rule.
