Why Meta Tags Matter for SEO

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide information about your web page to search engines and social media platforms. While not all meta tags directly affect rankings, the title tag and meta description are crucial for click-through rates from search results. Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control how your content appears when shared on social media.

A well-crafted title tag should be 50-60 characters, include your primary keyword near the beginning, and be compelling enough to earn clicks. The meta description should be 150-160 characters and serve as a "sales pitch" for your page — it doesn't directly affect rankings but significantly impacts click-through rates.

For African businesses building an online presence, proper meta tags are especially important for competing in local search results. Include location-specific keywords (like city or country names) in your title and description to improve local SEO. Open Graph tags ensure your content looks professional when shared on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter — the dominant social platforms across Africa.

This generator creates all the essential meta tags in one go: basic SEO tags, Open Graph tags for Facebook and WhatsApp sharing, Twitter Card tags, canonical URL, and robots directives. Simply fill in your page details, preview how it will look in Google and social media, and copy the generated code into your HTML.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do meta keywords still matter for SEO?

No. Google has officially stated that meta keywords are NOT a ranking factor and have not been since 2009. However, some other search engines (like Bing) may still consider them as a minor signal. We include them in our generator for completeness, but don't spend time optimizing them.

What size should my OG image be?

The recommended Open Graph image size is 1200 x 630 pixels. This works well for Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and most other platforms. Twitter prefers 1200 x 675 for summary_large_image cards. Keep important content centred as some platforms may crop the edges.
