How renovation cost is calculated

Total = (quantity × unit cost + fixed costs) × (1 + contingency ÷ 100). The contingency applies to the item cost and fixed costs together.

For an illustrative painting job, 40 m² × 50 currency units per m² gives 2,000. Add 200 for separately quoted preparation or transport, then 10% contingency: (2,000 + 200) × 1.10 = 2,420.

These numbers demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not market prices or a recommended contingency. Replace them with measurements, scope and quotes for your project.

Build a complete renovation budget

• Measure each room or work area and record the unit used in the quote.
• Separate materials and labour when quoted separately; do not add labour again when the unit price already includes it.
• Check removal, surface preparation, delivery, access, waste disposal and making good.
• Confirm whether tax is included. Add any separately quoted fees or tax once; this worksheet does not calculate a statutory tax rate.
• Agree what is excluded and choose a contingency for the uncertainty in your scope.
