Mauritania's tax system is managed by the Direction Generale des Impots (DGI) and applies a progressive personal income tax known as the Impot sur les Traitements et Salaires (ITS) with rates from 0% to 40%, denominated in the Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU). The progressive bands provide a tax-free threshold for lower earners, with rates increasing through multiple brackets to the top marginal rate of 40% on the highest income levels. Employees in Mauritania contribute to the Caisse Nationale de Securite Sociale (CNSS) for social security, with the employee share at approximately 1% of gross salary and employers contributing around 15%, covering pensions, family allowances, and occupational risk insurance. The extremely low employee share and high employer burden is a distinctive feature of Mauritania's social protection system.
