Malawi's tax system is administered by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and applies a progressive Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) income tax with rates from 0% to 30%, denominated in the Malawian Kwacha (MWK). The progressive tax brackets provide a tax-free threshold for the lowest earners, with a 25% rate on income in the middle bracket and the top marginal rate of 30% applying to income above the higher threshold. Malawi does not currently operate a mandatory national social security scheme for all employees, though the government has been working towards establishing a comprehensive pension framework. Many employers in the formal sector voluntarily provide pension benefits, and the Malawi National Pension Scheme Bill has been under development. Malawi applies a standard VAT rate of 16.5% on most goods and services, with zero-rating on exports and essential items including basic foodstuffs, medical supplies, and agricultural inputs. The fiscal year runs from April to March, and employers must withhold PAYE and remit it to the MRA by the 14th of the month following the pay period. Malawi's economy is predominantly agricultural, with tobacco, tea, and sugar being the primary export crops. The country has been diversifying into mining, tourism, and financial services.
