About Cameroon

Cameroon Tax & Finance Overview

Cameroon's tax system is administered by the Direction Generale des Impots (DGI) and applies a progressive personal income tax known as the Impot sur le Revenu des Personnes Physiques (IRPP) with rates ranging from 10% to 35%, denominated in the Central African CFA Franc (XAF). As a member of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), Cameroon shares its currency with five other Central African nations, providing exchange rate stability across the region. Employees are subject to mandatory social security contributions to the Caisse Nationale de Prevoyance Sociale (CNPS), with the employee share at approximately 4.2% of gross salary covering old-age pension and disability insurance. Employers bear a significantly larger burden, contributing around 11.2% for pension and up to 5% for family allowances and work injury insurance. A surtax of 10% on the IRPP is applied as a municipal levy on top of the standard income tax. Cameroon levies VAT at a standard rate of 19.25% including surcharges, making it one of the higher rates in the CEMAC region. Exemptions apply to basic foodstuffs, medical services, and educational supplies. The fiscal year is the calendar year, and employers must remit PAYE and social contributions monthly. Cameroon's bilingual economy with both English and French-speaking regions creates unique compliance considerations for multinational employers. AfroTools provides free DGI-compliant IRPP tax calculators, CNPS social contribution estimators, VAT tools, and salary breakdown calculators for Cameroon.
