The Real Cost Nobody Tells You

Every japa WhatsApp group throws around numbers. "It's like 3 million." "Nah, my guy spent 15 million." Both can be right. The actual cost of moving from Nigeria to Canada in 2026 depends on your pathway, family size, and how much you're willing to do yourself versus hiring consultants.

This article is purely about money. If you want the full visa process breakdown, read our Japa Guide: Nigeria to Canada 2026. Here, we're counting every naira.

Pre-Application Costs

Before you even touch the IRCC website, you're already spending. These costs hit you 3 to 6 months before your actual application.

ItemCost (NGN)Cost (CAD)Notes
IELTS General Training100,000 – 120,000~85Book early, slots fill fast in Lagos and Abuja
IELTS prep course (optional)30,000 – 150,00025 – 130Online courses are cheaper. YouTube is free.
WES ECA evaluation80,000 – 100,000~220Includes WES fee + transcript courier
Transcript/certificate verification20,000 – 50,00017 – 43Your university charges separately
Police clearance certificate10,000 – 15,000~10Nigeria Police Force, takes 2 to 4 weeks
Medical exam (panel physician)100,000 – 150,00085 – 130IRCC-approved doctors only
Passport (new or renewal)70,000 – 100,00060 – 8564-page recommended

Pre-application subtotal: NGN 410,000 to NGN 685,000. That's before you've paid Canada a single dollar.

Application Fees by Pathway

Three main pathways. Different price tags.

Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker)

FeeAmount (CAD)Approx. NGN
PR application fee850935,000
Right of Permanent Residence Fee515566,500
Biometrics8593,500
Total per applicant1,450~1,595,000

Add CAD 850 + CAD 515 for a spouse and CAD 230 per child. A family of four pays around CAD 4,140 (NGN 4.5 million) in fees alone.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Same federal fees as Express Entry, plus a provincial nomination fee. Alberta charges CAD 500. Ontario charges nothing. Saskatchewan charges CAD 350. Check your target province. PNP adds 600 CRS points, which practically guarantees an ITA if your province nominates you.

Study Permit then PGWP then PR

FeeAmount (CAD)Notes
Study permit application150Plus biometrics CAD 85
Tuition (per year)15,000 – 40,000Varies wildly by program
GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate)20,635Required proof of funds for students
PGWP application255After graduating
PR application (later)1,450Same as Express Entry

The study route costs NGN 8 million to NGN 20 million+ total. It's the most expensive path. But if your CRS score isn't high enough for Express Entry, it might be your only realistic option.

Proof of Funds Requirements

This is the big one. Canada wants to see money sitting in your account for at least 3 months. Not money that appeared last week.

Family SizeAmount (CAD)Approx. NGN
1 person14,690~16,160,000
2 people18,288~20,117,000
3 people22,483~24,731,000
4 people26,023~28,625,000

Quick note. If you've got a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, the proof of funds requirement is waived. That's rare for first-time applicants from Nigeria, but it happens. The good news is that this money isn't a fee. You keep it. It's there to prove you can feed yourself while you settle.

First-Month Settlement Costs in Canada

You've landed. Congratulations. Now you need somewhere to sleep, a phone that works, and winter clothes your body has never needed before.

ExpenseAmount (CAD)Notes
Flight (one-way Lagos to Toronto)800 – 1,500Book 2+ months ahead
First + last month rent2,400 – 4,000Shared apartment in Toronto/GTA
Winter clothing300 – 600Buy at Value Village or Walmart, not the airport
SIM card + phone plan40 – 80Fido, Koodo, or Public Mobile
Groceries (first month)300 – 500African stores exist. Prices are higher.
Transit pass130 – 160Monthly TTC/transit pass
Miscellaneous (bedding, kitchen basics)200 – 400Facebook Marketplace is your friend

First-month settlement: CAD 4,170 to CAD 7,240. That's NGN 4.6 million to NGN 8 million. Some people spend less by staying with family or friends initially. Many don't have that option.

Total Cost Summary

Let's put it all together for a single applicant going through Express Entry.

CategoryLow Estimate (NGN)High Estimate (NGN)
Pre-application costs410,000685,000
Application fees1,595,0001,595,000
Proof of funds (kept, not spent)16,160,00016,160,000
Settlement costs4,600,0008,000,000
Total (excluding proof of funds)6,605,00010,280,000
Total (including proof of funds)22,765,00026,440,000

So yes. If someone tells you they japa'd to Canada on 5 million naira, they probably had family accommodation, a high CRS score, and didn't count the proof of funds. If someone says 25 million, they're counting everything including the money sitting in their account. Both are telling the truth. Context matters.

CRS Score Optimization Tips

Your CRS score determines whether you get an Invitation to Apply. The 2026 cutoff floats between 440 and 520 for general draws. Here's how to push yours up without spending more money.

Realistic Timeline

Don't let anyone tell you this takes 3 months. It doesn't.

Total: 12 to 18 months is realistic. Some people get lucky with 8 months. Others wait 24 months. Start saving now regardless.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a single applicant going through Express Entry, budget between NGN 5 million and NGN 10 million for actual expenses (fees, flights, settlement). You'll also need NGN 16 million as proof of funds, but that money stays in your account. A family of four should budget NGN 12 million to NGN 18 million in expenses, plus NGN 28 million proof of funds.

No. Express Entry requires an approved language test. You can take CELPIP instead of IELTS for English, or TEF/TCF if you're applying through French. There's no way to skip the language requirement for permanent residence. Some study permits accept other evidence of English, but you'll still need a formal test for PR later.

Express Entry is significantly cheaper. You're looking at NGN 5 million to 10 million total versus NGN 8 million to 20 million+ for the study route (including tuition). The trade-off is that Express Entry requires a competitive CRS score, while a study permit has lower barriers to entry. The study route also takes 3 to 5 years longer to reach PR status.

A single applicant needs CAD 14,690 (around NGN 16 million). A family of two needs CAD 18,288. A family of four needs CAD 26,023. This money must sit in your bank account for at least 3 consecutive months. IRCC checks bank statements. Don't try to borrow money temporarily. They catch that.

Expect 12 to 18 months from your first IELTS registration to physically landing in Canada. The WES evaluation alone takes 2 to 4 months because Nigerian universities are notoriously slow with transcripts. After receiving an Invitation to Apply, PR processing takes another 4 to 8 months. Start your prep while you're still saving.
