Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the single most important number in your academic career at a Nigerian university. It determines your degree classification — First Class, Second Class Upper, Second Class Lower, Third Class, or Pass — which in turn affects your eligibility for scholarships, postgraduate programs, jobs, and professional opportunities. Understanding how GPA is calculated, what the scales mean, and how to strategically improve your CGPA is essential for every Nigerian student.

This guide covers both the 4.0 scale and the 5.0 scale used across Nigerian universities, with worked examples and practical tips. Use the AfroTools GPA Calculator to compute your results instantly.

Nigerian University Grading Scales

Nigerian universities use two main grading scales. The 5.0 scale is the most common and is used by the majority of federal and state universities. The 4.0 scale is used primarily by some private universities and is aligned with the American GPA system.

5.0 Scale (Most Nigerian Universities)

Score Range (%)Letter GradeGrade PointClassification
70 – 100A5.0Excellent
60 – 69B4.0Very Good
50 – 59C3.0Good
45 – 49D2.0Fair
40 – 44E1.0Pass
0 – 39F0.0Fail

4.0 Scale

Score Range (%)Letter GradeGrade Point
70 – 100A4.0
60 – 69B3.0
50 – 59C2.0
45 – 49D1.0

How to Calculate GPA and CGPA

The calculation is the same regardless of whether your university uses the 4.0 or 5.0 scale:

  1. List all courses with their credit units and letter grades.
  2. Convert letter grades to grade points using your university's scale.
  3. Calculate quality points for each course: Grade Point x Credit Units.
  4. Sum all quality points across all courses.
  5. Sum all credit units.
  6. Divide total quality points by total credit units. This is your GPA (for one semester) or CGPA (for all semesters combined).

Formula: CGPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Units

Worked Example (5.0 Scale)

Suppose a 200-level student at the University of Lagos has these results for the first semester:

Course CodeCourse TitleCreditsScoreGradeGPQuality Points
ACC 201Financial Accounting I472A5.020.0
BUS 201Business Statistics365B4.012.0
ECO 201Microeconomics358C3.09.0
MGT 201Principles of Management373A5.015.0
GST 201Nigerian History261B4.08.0
LAW 201Business Law248D2.04.0
TOTALS1768.0

Semester GPA = 68.0 / 17 = 4.00

This student's GPA of 4.00 for this semester places them in the Second Class Upper range. If their previous CGPA was 4.30 with 34 total credits and 146.2 quality points, the new CGPA would be:

New CGPA = (146.2 + 68.0) / (34 + 17) = 214.2 / 51 = 4.20

Still Second Class Upper, and the D grade in LAW 201 pulled the semester down. If that course had been a B instead, the semester GPA would have been (68 + 4) / 17 = 4.24. Every grade matters.

Why Your Degree Class Matters

How to Improve Your CGPA

The Mathematics of CGPA Recovery

Understanding the math helps set realistic expectations. If you have a CGPA of 3.00 after 100 credit units (total quality points = 300), getting straight A's (5.0) in the next 20 credit units adds 100 quality points: new CGPA = 400/120 = 3.33. That is only a 0.33 improvement. The more credits already completed, the harder it is to move the CGPA. This is why strong performance in early semesters is so important.

Strategic Course Selection

Within your program's flexibility, prioritize courses where you have natural strength. If you excel at quantitative subjects, take additional math-heavy electives. If you are strong in essays and analysis, choose those electives. Every A contributes more quality points than a B, and the gap between a B and a D in a 4-credit course is 8 quality points — equivalent to getting an A in two additional 2-credit courses.

Focus on High-Credit Courses

A 4-credit course has twice the impact on your CGPA as a 2-credit course. Getting an A in a 4-credit course adds 20 quality points (5.0 x 4); getting an A in a 2-credit course adds only 10. Invest disproportionate study time in your highest-credit courses.

Attend Classes and Tutorials

This sounds obvious but is worth emphasizing. Many Nigerian university lecturers include material from lectures and tutorials in exams that is not in textbooks. Class attendance, participation, and relationship with lecturers also often affects continuous assessment marks, which typically constitute 30-40% of the final grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CGPA is First Class in Nigeria?

On the 5.0 scale, a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00 is First Class Honours. On the 4.0 scale, 3.50 to 4.00. The exact cut-off varies by university — some use 4.50, others 4.60. Check your institution's academic regulations.

How do I calculate my CGPA?

Multiply each course's grade point by its credit units to get quality points. Sum all quality points and divide by total credit units. Example: three courses with grades A(5), B(4), C(3) and credits 3, 4, 2: Quality points = 15+16+6 = 37. Credits = 9. CGPA = 37/9 = 4.11.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is for a single semester. CGPA is cumulative across all semesters from the start of your program. Your final CGPA at graduation determines your degree classification.

Can I convert my CGPA from the 5.0 scale to the 4.0 scale?

A common approximation is to multiply your 5.0-scale CGPA by 0.8 (e.g., 4.0 on 5.0 scale = 3.2 on 4.0 scale). However, this is a rough estimate. For official purposes (graduate school applications), use WES or other credential evaluation services for an accurate conversion.

What happens if I fail a course?

An F grade (0.0 grade point) counts toward your CGPA calculation with zero quality points but the full credit units. This significantly drags down your CGPA. At most universities, you must retake and pass all failed courses before graduation. When you retake a course, both results may count in your CGPA (depending on university policy), or the new grade may replace the old one.
