Ghana Car Import Cost Guide 2026

Verification note: this guide was refreshed on 24 April 2026 using Ghana Revenue Authority vehicle importation guidance and the current AfroTools Ghana calculator workflow. Ghana import charges can change through ICUMS, exchange rates and statutory updates, so treat this as a planning guide.

For a broader market view, read Car Import Cost in Africa 2026, which compares Ghana with Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

If the car is coming from Japan, check the Japan to Africa used-car import checklist before paying a deposit.

The Ghana Car Import Cost Calculator separates GRA statutory charges from third-party charges. That split matters when comparing Tema, Takoradi, a bonded warehouse option or a local dealer quote. The number people mention casually is often only the duty side. The amount needed to put the car on the road includes valuation, levies, port handling, agent work, registration-related costs and delivery.

What GRA says to check first

GRA's vehicle importation page says the likely duty can be checked in ICUMS using vehicle details such as chassis or VIN, model, year and make. It also explains that vehicle duty calculation starts from the first purchase price, applies age-based depreciation, converts the result with the current exchange rate and then considers freight and insurance. This is why a Ghana estimate should not rely only on the auction invoice.

Before paying a seller, collect the export title, bill of lading or waybill details, VIN, make, model, year, engine capacity and shipment route. Without those details, an estimate is only a rough screen.

Cost stack for Ghana imports

LayerPlanning questionBudget risk
Customs valueDoes the declared price match the GRA valuation basis?Depreciation, exchange rate and freight assumptions can change the value used for duty.
Statutory chargesWhich duty, VAT, NHIL, GETFund and other levy lines apply?Different vehicle classes and engine sizes can produce different charge stacks.
Overage and steeringIs the vehicle age and steering configuration acceptable?Older vehicles and right-hand steering can create penalties, restrictions or approval problems.
Port chargesWhat will the shipping line, terminal and safe bond process cost?Delay, storage and terminal handling can turn a cheap purchase into an expensive release.
Road-ready costsWhat remains after customs release?Trade number plates, agent fees, local movement and DVLA steps are often missed.

Right-hand steering deserves early attention

GRA guidance says right-hand steering vehicles are not allowed as a normal import route, with a policy dispensation available only through the relevant ministerial process. If you are looking at a UK or Japan-origin vehicle, do not assume it can be cleared in Ghana just because it can be shipped. Confirm the steering issue before paying a deposit.

Formula walkthrough

For planning, treat Ghana car import cost as customs value plus statutory charges plus third-party port charges plus registration and local delivery. Keep the statutory and non-statutory charges separate. That makes it easier to compare an ICUMS output with a clearing quote and easier to spot whether the quote is missing safe bond rent, trade plates or agent fees.

Use two scenarios in the calculator: one using the seller's expected price and one using a higher customs value or weaker cedi. If the import only beats a local purchase under the best case, the margin is probably too thin.
