Fertilizer Use in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has historically been one of Africa's most productive agricultural economies, with a well-developed commercial farming sector that has undergone significant structural changes since the land reform program of 2000. Agriculture remains critical for livelihoods and food security, with maize, tobacco, cotton, soybeans, wheat, and horticultural products as the main crops. Annual fertilizer consumption ranges from 200,000 to 400,000 tonnes, though this has fluctuated with economic conditions and land-use changes. Zimbabwe has domestic fertilizer manufacturing capacity through ZimPhos (Zimbabwe Phosphate Industries, producing SSP and compound fertilizers from local phosphate rock) and Sable Chemicals (producing ammonium nitrate from electrolysis). The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has been involved in input distribution, while the private sector includes established companies like Windmill, ZFC (Zimbabwe Fertilizer Company), and Agricura.

Common Fertilizer Types

Compound D (7-14-7) is Zimbabwe's most widely used basal fertilizer, particularly for maize on the communal and A1 resettlement farms. Ammonium nitrate (34.5% AN) is the standard nitrogen top-dressing, domestically produced by Sable Chemicals. Compound L (5-18-10+8S) is recommended for tobacco, Zimbabwe's largest export earner, and is widely used in the contract farming system. Compound S (7-21-7+6S) is used for crops on sulfur-deficient soils. SSP (single superphosphate) is locally manufactured from Dorowa phosphate rock. For sugarcane in the Lowveld, intensive nitrogen programs use AN and specialized blends. The well-established agricultural research system (DRSS, formerly Agricultural Research Trust) provides detailed fertilizer recommendations based on decades of local trial data. Compound J (5-15-12) is used for potatoes and horticultural crops requiring high potassium.

Subsidy Programs & Access

Zimbabwe's government supports smallholder farmers through the Presidential Inputs Scheme (previously known as the Command Agriculture program or Pfumvudza/Intwasa program), which provides subsidized input packages to registered households. Under the current scheme, smallholder farmers receive seed and fertilizer sufficient for a small plot (typically 0.06 hectares or more depending on the program variant) at minimal or no direct cost. The Pfumvudza conservation agriculture program promotes precise input use on small plots to maximize productivity. Distribution is managed through the GMB and district administrator offices, with inputs channeled through political and traditional leadership structures at the ward level. For tobacco, the contract farming system (led by companies like Mashonaland Tobacco Company and others) provides comprehensive input packages to contracted growers with costs recovered from tobacco sales. Commercial farmers purchase fertilizer through agro-dealer networks (Farmec, Agricura, Farm & City Centre) at market prices. The challenging macroeconomic environment, including currency instability and foreign exchange constraints, has periodically disrupted fertilizer supply and affordability.
