Fertilizer Use in South Africa

South Africa has the most developed and commercially sophisticated fertilizer market on the African continent. The country is both a major producer and consumer of fertilizers, with annual consumption of approximately 2 to 2.5 million tonnes of nutrient equivalent. The agricultural sector ranges from large-scale commercial farms producing maize, wheat, sugarcane, citrus, grapes, and deciduous fruits to smallholder farmers on communal land. Sasol, Omnia, and Foskor are major domestic fertilizer producers, while companies like Yara South Africa, Kynoch (now part of Farmchem), and numerous regional blenders serve the distribution market. The Fertilizer Association of Southern Africa (Fertasa) represents the industry and coordinates quality standards. South Africa's fertilizer market operates on fully commercial principles, with prices reflecting international commodity costs, production expenses, and logistics.

Common Fertilizer Types

LAN (limestone ammonium nitrate, 28% N) is South Africa's most widely used nitrogen fertilizer, preferred for its soil-acidifying properties being partially offset by the limestone component. NPK compound fertilizers in the 2-3-2 (22), 2-3-4 (30), 3-2-1 (25), and 3-1-5 (26) formulations are standard for basal application in maize, vegetable, and mixed farming systems. Urea (46-0-0) is used in large-scale cereal production and for fertigation in irrigated systems. MAP and DAP are used as phosphorus sources. Potassium chloride (KCl) is the standard potash source. For sugarcane in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, specialized high-nitrogen blends and controlled-release formulations are used. The horticultural and wine grape sectors use precision fertigation with soluble specialty fertilizers. Gypsum and lime are widely applied for soil amendment. The highly competitive market means farmers have access to a wide range of specialty products including slow-release, coated, and organic-mineral blended fertilizers.

Subsidy Programs & Access

South Africa does not operate a general fertilizer subsidy program for commercial farmers, as the agricultural input market is fully liberalized and commercially operated. However, smallholder and emerging farmers on communal land receive various forms of government support. The Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) and the Ilima/Letsema conditional grants provide input support, including fertilizer, to small-scale and subsistence farmers through provincial departments of agriculture. The Land Bank and Micro Agricultural Financial Institutions of South Africa (MAFISA) provide agricultural credit that can be used for input purchases.
