Fertilizer Use in Namibia
Namibia is one of the driest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with agriculture constrained by extreme aridity across much of the territory. The northern communal areas, which receive higher rainfall, support the majority of crop production, including pearl millet (mahangu), sorghum, and maize. The commercial farming sector in the central and southern regions focuses on livestock ranching and irrigated agriculture along the Orange and Kunene rivers. Annual fertilizer consumption is relatively low at approximately 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes. The country imports all its fertilizer, primarily from South Africa. Irrigated agriculture along the Orange River produces table grapes, dates, and vegetables using intensive fertilizer management. The government's agricultural policy balances support for communal area food security with commercial sector development, and both face the fundamental constraint of water scarcity.
Common Fertilizer Types
LAN (limestone ammonium nitrate, 28% N) and NPK 2-3-2 (22) are the most commonly used fertilizers in Namibia, following South African product standards and agricultural practices. For pearl millet in the northern communal areas, NPK compounds and urea are recommended but used at rates well below optimal due to cost and access constraints. Superphosphate is important for phosphorus supply on the sandy soils of the northern regions. For irrigated table grape production along the Orange River, sophisticated fertigation programs use soluble NPK, calcium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, and micronutrient packages. Potassium sulfate is preferred for grape and date production. The commercial livestock sector uses phosphorus supplements rather than pasture fertilizer in the extensive rangeland systems. Organic amendments including composted kraal manure are widely used in communal area farming, supplemented by crop residue management.
Subsidy Programs & Access
Namibia supports communal area farmers through the Comprehensive Conservation Agriculture Programme and the Drought Relief Programme, both of which include input distribution components. The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform provides subsidized seed and fertilizer to registered communal farmers, primarily in the northern crop-producing regions (Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena, Kavango, Zambezi). Subsidies can cover 50 to 80% of input costs depending on the program and season. Farmers register through the local extension offices of the Ministry. Distribution is organized through community headmen and regional councils. The Agribank of Namibia provides seasonal loans for commercial farmers' input purchases. The Green Scheme, a government initiative to develop irrigated agriculture, provides significant support to farmers on state-developed irrigation schemes, including fertilizer provision. Private sector agro-dealers operate primarily in towns, with limited presence in rural communal areas.
