Fertilizer Use in Mali
Mali is a large, landlocked West African country where agriculture and pastoralism are the economic foundations, with cotton and rice as the dominant crops. The country consumes approximately 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes of fertilizer annually, heavily concentrated in the cotton zone managed by CMDT (Compagnie Malienne pour le Developpement des Textiles) and the irrigated rice perimeter of the Office du Niger near Segou. Mali imports all its mineral fertilizer, primarily through the port of Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire) and Dakar (Senegal), with high transport costs due to the country's inland position. Soil fertility management is a critical challenge, particularly in the Sahelian north where desertification threatens agricultural livelihoods. The government views increased fertilizer use as essential for food security and economic growth.
Common Fertilizer Types
Cotton-specific NPK blends, particularly complex fertilizer with the formulation NPKSB 15-15-15-6S-1B, are the most consumed fertilizers in Mali, provided through the CMDT cotton input credit system. Urea (46-0-0) is widely used as a top-dressing for cotton, rice, and maize. DAP (18-46-0) is the preferred basal fertilizer for irrigated rice in the Office du Niger zone, where intensive double-cropping achieves yields comparable to Asian rice systems. NPK 17-17-17 is used for food crops outside the cotton zone. Subsidy Programs & Access
Mali's fertilizer access system operates through two main channels. In the cotton zone, CMDT provides fertilizer on credit to contracted cotton farmers, with costs deducted from cotton revenues at harvest. This system covers approximately 200,000 cotton farming households and is the largest organized input distribution channel in the country. For food crops, the government operates a subsidized fertilizer program through the Office du Niger (for irrigated rice) and through the national subsidy scheme managed by the Ministry of Agriculture. The food crop subsidy typically covers 15 to 25% of the fertilizer price. Farmers access subsidized inputs through their village-level farmer organizations and approved input dealers. The ECOWAS-supported regional fertilizer initiative and bilateral partners (particularly the Netherlands, Canada, and the World Bank) have supported market development, agro-dealer training, and voucher programs to complement the government subsidy. Distribution logistics remain challenging given Mali's vast territory and the concentration of import corridors through distant coastal ports.
