Fertilizer Use in Lesotho

Lesotho is a small, mountainous kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, with agriculture focused on maize, wheat, sorghum, and extensive livestock grazing. The country's high altitude (entirely above 1,400 meters) and rugged terrain limit arable land to the western lowlands and the Senqu River valley. Agriculture contributes about 5% of GDP but remains important for rural household food security. Fertilizer consumption is low, estimated at 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes annually. All fertilizer is imported from South Africa through well-established cross-border supply chains. Declining soil fertility due to erosion on steep slopes is a major concern, with the country losing significant topsoil each year. Common Fertilizer Types

NPK 2-3-4 (30) and LAN (limestone ammonium nitrate, 28% N) are the most commonly used fertilizers in Lesotho, following South African agricultural practices and product standards. Superphosphate is applied to the generally phosphorus-deficient soils, particularly in the lowlands where maize and wheat are the main crops.
