Fertilizer Use in Kenya

Kenya is East Africa's largest economy and one of the continent's most significant agricultural producers, with agriculture contributing about 25% of GDP. The country consumes approximately 500,000 to 600,000 tonnes of fertilizer annually, driven by intensive maize, tea, wheat, coffee, sugarcane, and horticultural production. Kenya imports virtually all its fertilizer, with the port of Mombasa serving as the entry point and transit hub for East Africa. The fertilizer market was liberalized in the 1990s, creating a competitive private sector distribution network. However, the government has re-entered the market periodically with subsidized fertilizer to stabilize prices. The Kenya National Farmers Federation (KENAFF) and county governments play important roles in advocating for farmer access to affordable inputs.

Common Fertilizer Types

DAP (18-46-0) has historically been Kenya's most consumed fertilizer, widely used as a basal dressing for maize, the country's staple crop. However, CAN (calcium ammonium nitrate, 26% N) has traditionally been the top-dressing of choice for cereals. NPK 17-17-17 and NPK 23-23-0 are used for various food crops. For tea, one of Kenya's top export earners, specialized NPK 26-5-5 (NPKS) formulations are produced specifically for tea estates and smallholders by companies including MEA Fertilizers. TSP is applied in areas with severe phosphorus deficiency. Mavuno brand blended fertilizers, developed with support from IFDC, offer region- and crop-specific formulations based on Kenyan soil analysis. For horticulture, one of the fastest-growing agricultural sectors, soluble and controlled-release fertilizers are widely used under greenhouse and open-field drip irrigation systems.

Subsidy Programs & Access

Kenya's fertilizer subsidy program has evolved significantly over the years. The government operates a subsidized fertilizer distribution scheme through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), offering DAP and CAN at prices below market rates to registered smallholder farmers. Under recent iterations, the program distributes fertilizer through NCPB depots across the country, with farmers presenting their national ID and a simple registration form. The subsidy rate has varied from 30 to 50% depending on government budget allocation and international price fluctuations. County governments have also initiated their own input subsidy programs to complement the national scheme. The e-subsidy platform, which uses digital farmer registration and mobile money payments, has been piloted to improve efficiency and reduce ghost beneficiaries. The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) provides the scientific basis for fertilizer recommendations, and county-level extension officers advise farmers on appropriate fertilizer types and application rates.
