Fertilizer Use in Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is a small West African nation where cashew nut production dominates the economy, accounting for over 90% of exports. Agriculture employs about 80% of the population, with rice as the main food crop and cashew as the primary cash crop. Annual fertilizer consumption is very low, estimated at under 5,000 tonnes, as most farming systems rely on natural soil fertility with minimal external inputs. Rice cultivation occurs in both rainfed upland areas and in the mangrove-edge paddy systems (bolanhas) that characterize the coastal zones.
