Fertilizer Use in Guinea

Guinea is a West African country with significant agricultural potential, endowed with abundant water resources and diverse agroecological zones from the coastal lowlands to the Fouta Djallon highlands and the forested Guinea region. Agriculture employs over 60% of the population, with rice, maize, cassava, groundnuts, palm oil, coffee, and fruits as the main crops. Despite its agricultural importance, fertilizer consumption remains low at approximately 30,000 to 50,000 tonnes annually. The country has significant phosphate rock deposits at Kaloum near Conakry, though these remain largely unexploited for domestic fertilizer production. All mineral fertilizer is currently imported through the port of Conakry. Common Fertilizer Types

NPK 15-15-15 and NPK 10-10-20 are the most commonly used compound fertilizers in Guinea, applied to rice, maize, and vegetables. Urea (46-0-0) is the standard nitrogen top-dressing for rice in both lowland and upland systems. DAP is used in irrigated rice perimeters and vegetable production. TSP (triple superphosphate) is recommended for the phosphorus-deficient soils common across the Fouta Djallon highlands and forest zone. For coffee production in the Guinea Forestiere region, NPK blends with calcium amendments are recommended to counteract soil acidity. Organic amendments are critically important, with composted cattle manure from the Fouta Djallon's significant pastoral economy providing a valuable nutrient source.
