Fertilizer Use in Eritrea

Eritrea is a small, arid East African nation where agriculture is critical for the livelihoods of the majority of the population, despite producing only about 15 to 20% of the country's food needs. The western lowlands grow sorghum and sesame, the central highlands produce barley, wheat, teff, and pulses, and the eastern escarpment supports limited cultivation. Fertilizer consumption is very low, estimated at around 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes annually, constrained by foreign currency shortages and import logistics. The country has no domestic fertilizer production and relies entirely on imports. The government controls the agricultural sector through the Ministry of Agriculture and state-owned enterprises. Common Fertilizer Types

DAP (18-46-0) and urea (46-0-0) are the two primary fertilizers used in Eritrea, a combination similar to neighboring Ethiopia's historical pattern. DAP is applied as a basal dressing for cereals including wheat, barley, and teff in the highlands, while urea serves as a top-dressing nitrogen source. NPK blends are less commonly used due to limited availability. The government promotes soil testing to optimize fertilizer application, but coverage of testing services remains limited. Organic amendments including composted manure, crop residues, and green manures are integral to farming systems, particularly in the highlands where animal traction is common and livestock manure is readily available.
