Fertilizer Use in Egypt

Egypt is Africa's largest fertilizer consumer and one of its major producers, with annual consumption exceeding 5 million tonnes of nutrient equivalent. The country's intensive irrigated agriculture along the Nile Valley and Delta is among the most productive in Africa, supporting crops including wheat, rice, maize, cotton, sugarcane, clover (berseem), and a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Egypt has significant domestic fertilizer manufacturing capacity, with major plants operated by Abu Qir Fertilizers, MOPCO (Misr Oil Processing Company), KIMA, and Egyptian Chemical Industries (KIMA Aswan). The country is a major producer and exporter of urea and ammonium nitrate, leveraging subsidized natural gas feedstock. The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation regulates fertilizer distribution through a network of cooperatives and authorized dealers.

Common Fertilizer Types

Urea (46-0-0) is Egypt's most consumed fertilizer, produced domestically in large quantities and distributed through the cooperative system at subsidized prices. Ammonium nitrate (33.5% N) is the second most important nitrogen fertilizer, widely used for cereals and sugarcane. Superphosphate (both single and triple) is produced from Egyptian rock phosphate reserves and used extensively on the calcareous soils of the New Lands. NPK compound fertilizers are used in horticulture and intensive vegetable production. Potassium sulfate is preferred over potassium chloride for sensitive crops like tomatoes and potatoes. Compound fertilizers with micronutrients (zinc, iron, manganese) are increasingly important for the alkaline, high-pH soils of the Nile Delta and reclaimed desert areas. Fertigation with soluble fertilizers is standard practice in the New Lands under drip irrigation.

Subsidy Programs & Access

Egypt has one of the longest-running and most comprehensive fertilizer subsidy programs in Africa. The government sets official prices for urea and ammonium nitrate sold through the agricultural cooperative system, typically at 50 to 60% below international market prices. Subsidized fertilizer is distributed through the Principal Bank for Development and Agricultural Credit and local agricultural cooperatives. Registered farmers receive fertilizer allocations based on their planted area and crop type, with quotas determined by the local agricultural directorate. The subsidy is funded partly by the price differential between subsidized domestic gas for fertilizer production and international gas prices. Farmers must present their landholding certificate (green card) or rental agreement at the cooperative to receive their allocation. The government has been gradually reforming the subsidy system to improve targeting and reduce diversion to the black market, where subsidized fertilizer is sometimes resold at higher prices.
