Fertilizer Use in Botswana

Botswana's agricultural sector contributes less than 3% of GDP, with the economy dominated by diamond mining and services. However, farming remains important for rural livelihoods, with cattle ranching being the predominant agricultural activity. Crop production is limited by low and erratic rainfall, with most arable farming concentrated in the eastern districts around Gaborone, Francistown, and the Tuli Block. The country consumes relatively small quantities of fertilizer, estimated at 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes annually. Sorghum, maize, millet, and cowpeas are the main food crops, while horticulture (vegetables, citrus) uses more intensive input systems. Botswana imports all its fertilizers, primarily from South Africa, through established agricultural supply companies.

Common Fertilizer Types

NPK compound fertilizers, particularly 2-3-2 (22) and 3-2-1 (25) formulations common in the Southern African market, are the most widely used in Botswana. These blends are well-suited for the sandy, low-fertility soils prevalent in the eastern farming districts. Limestone ammonium nitrate (LAN 28%) is the preferred nitrogen top-dressing for cereal crops and irrigated pastures. Superphosphate is applied to phosphorus-deficient soils, which are widespread across the country. For horticultural operations, soluble NPK fertilizers and calcium nitrate are used in drip-irrigated systems. Kraal manure (cattle manure) remains the most commonly used soil amendment among traditional farmers, reflecting the country's large cattle population relative to its human population.

Subsidy Programs & Access

Botswana operates the Integrated Support Programme for Arable Agriculture Development (ISPAAD), which provides subsidized inputs including fertilizer to registered farmers. Under ISPAAD, the government covers up to 80% of the cost of approved fertilizers for smallholder farmers cultivating up to 16 hectares, and 40% for farmers with larger holdings up to 150 hectares. Farmers register with their local District Agricultural Office and receive input vouchers redeemable at approved suppliers. The program is administered through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Subsidized fertilizer is distributed through a network of private agro-dealers and the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB).
