Tanzania's agricultural finance landscape has grown significantly since the establishment of TADB in 2015. The Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank provides low-rate funding at 8% per year specifically for cooperatives, irrigation schemes, and commercial farms. CRDB Bank's Kilimo product is the most widely used commercial agri-loan, available through an extensive rural branch network and the Tembo mobile app. SACCOs and VICOBAs remain the most accessible community-level credit, especially for smallholders in remote regions who save regularly and borrow against their deposits.
TADB (Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank) is Tanzania's dedicated agricultural development bank, established in 2015. It lends at 8% per year to cooperatives, smallholder groups, irrigation schemes, and commercial farmers. Loan sizes from TSh 500,000 to TSh 500 million. TADB actively works through cooperatives and farmer groups.
CRDB Bank's 'Kilimo' (meaning 'agriculture') loan is one of Tanzania's most popular commercial agri-products. Available from TSh 1M to TSh 100M at 14% per year. CRDB has a very wide rural branch network and mobile banking via the Tembo app. Good for farmers with 6+ months banking relationship with CRDB.
SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperatives) and VICOBAs (Village Community Banks) are the most accessible community credit in Tanzania. You save regularly with the SACCO, then borrow up to 2-3× your savings. Interest rates of 10-18% are much better than MFIs. Join a SACCO 6 months before you need the loan and maintain regular deposits.
NMB Bank's Mkononi app and CRDB's Tembo app allow digital loan applications. M-Pawa (by Vodacom and CBA) provides micro-loans via mobile phone for those with M-Pesa accounts. These mobile products are especially useful for farmers far from bank branches.
