About the Crop Yield Estimator

AfroTools' Crop Yield Estimator helps African farmers, agricultural advisors, and researchers estimate expected crop yields based on their specific conditions. Each country tool uses region-specific data including agroecological zones, soil types, growing seasons, and local market prices.

How It Works

Select your crop, region, farm size, and farming practices (irrigation, fertilizer, seed type). The calculator applies research-backed multipliers to national average yield data, producing an estimate with low, mid, and high ranges. You also get revenue projections in local currency and actionable recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the yield estimates?

Estimates are based on national average yields from FAOSTAT adjusted by research-backed multipliers for region, soil, irrigation, fertilizer, and seed type. They provide a reasonable range but actual yields depend on many factors including weather, pests, and management practices.

What crops are covered?

Over 40 crop types are in our database, including cereals (maize, rice, sorghum, millet, wheat, teff), roots and tubers (cassava, yam, sweet potato), legumes (cowpea, groundnut, soybean), cash crops (cocoa, coffee, tea, cotton), fruits, and vegetables. Each country page shows only the crops grown in that country.

Where does the data come from?

Primary sources include FAOSTAT (FAO), HarvestStat Africa, World Bank, national statistics bureaus, and CGIAR research centers. Yield data uses 3-5 year averages to smooth out weather variability.

Can I use this for farm planning?

Yes. The tool is designed to help with pre-season planning, input budgeting, and revenue forecasting. However, consult your local agricultural extension office for specific advice on your farm conditions.
